Take your Easter egg hunt up a notch!
With spring in full swing and the April holiday just around the corner, you might find that egg-decorating time has quickly crept up on you. This year, instead of the go-to double-dipped design, try one of these speckled, swirled and stamped ideas from the April issue of Martha Stewart Living.
1. Magnificent Marble
Similar to how we created these adorable marbled mugs, these swirled beauties are made from dye and a surprise pantry ingredient: olive oil! Submerge your egg into a cup of dye and remove it. While it dries, set up a shallow bowl of dye in a shade or two darker than the original, and add a tablespoon of olive oil. Run a fork over the surface to create swirls, roll the dried egg in the mixture and marvel at your finished product.
2. Beautiful Blooms
This fresh floral look is simpler than it seems, requiring only small rubber stamps and chalk-ink pads to grow. After you’ve stamped one of the designs of your choosing, dry it with a hairdryer before moving on to the next section to ensure you don’t smudge your DIY garden.
The most time-consuming of the trio, these splattered works of art are surely worth the extra effort — plus, the process is so fun (and tasty!). First, gather up any dry goods you have in the kitchen (peanuts, white rice, beans and more will all do), and separate them into cups. Add 10-15 drops of dye per cup, and mix until the dye covers the contents. Place your egg in the mixture and shake to your heart’s content!
